How to Fast and Pray for a Future Husband

How to Start Fasting and Praying for a Future Husband

Fasting and praying for a future husband will help you to hear God clearly, find a Godly man, and prepare to be an amazing wife!

Sis, do you want a healthy marriage, or do you want a marriage where you have to drag your husband to church, beg him to pray, confront his pride, and constantly remind him that God is leading your lives? I think you want healthy.

Because how can you submit to a man who does not submit to God?

I have talked to too many women who married men who were not truly pursuing God, and they ended up carrying the spiritual weight of the relationship. Over time, that can wear you down emotionally, mentally, and physically. Then add children, financial pressure, and everyday responsibilities, and you may find yourself carrying burdens that were never meant to be yours alone.

The truth is, good men exist. But a godly man is accountable to God. He is not perfect, but he recognizes that without God, his flesh can lead him into things that hurt himself and the people he loves. So he seeks God, receives correction, takes responsibility, and wants his life to reflect Him.

Paul was honest about this too. He said marriage can bring “many troubles in this life” and that the responsibilities of marriage can divide a person’s attention from the things of the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:28, 32-35). That is why you do not have to rush because you are afraid of being alone. You already have good works God prepared for you to walk in (Ephesians 2:10). Your life with God does not have to be put on hold while you wait for a husband.

Pray. Heal. Grow. Let God shape your desires instead of letting loneliness choose for you. God is not slow. His timing does not need your panic to make it happen.

Why should you fast and pray for a future husband?

  • To Realign With God: Fasting and prayer help empty us of impatience, fear, loneliness, and the desire to be loved by another person. They realign our hearts with God’s priorities instead of letting our emotions lead us.
  • To Let God Search Your Heart: Fasting gives you time to slow down and allow God to search your heart, reveal what needs to change, and show you what may be getting in the way of His will.
  • To Choose From Healing, Not Emotional Need: When we have allowed God to heal us, we can choose a husband from wisdom and discernment instead of choosing someone because we feel lonely, unloved, or afraid to be alone.
  • To Prepare to Be a Wife: Proverbs 18:22 says, “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.” A man looking for a wife should be able to recognize the difference between a woman who simply wants to be married and a woman who is preparing to be a wife. Let God develop your character, wisdom, faith, and maturity so you are becoming the woman a godly man can recognize.
  • To Trust God With the Timing: Fasting and prayer are not about forcing God to give you a husband. They teach you to surrender the timing, the person, and the process to Him while continuing to grow in the life He has given you.

How to Start Fasting and Praying for a Future Husband

1. Bring Your Desire to God:

Before you begin your fast, bring your desire for marriage to God. Be honest about what you want, but also surrender the outcome to Him. Ask Him to help you release impatience, fear, loneliness, and the need to feel loved through another person.

2. Choose a fast and time frame:

Once you’ve consulted with God and received clarity on your journey, it’s time to choose a fasting method and establish a timeframe for your fast. Prayerfully consider which type of fast aligns best with your spiritual goals and preferences. Whether you opt for a social media fast, liquid fast, sunrise to sunset fast, sugar fast, technology fast, or Daniel Fast, commit to it with sincerity and determination. Set a clear timeframe for your fast, whether it’s a day, several days, or an extended period. Having a defined timeframe will help you stay focused and committed to your fasting journey.

3. Set a designated time for prayer:

Schedule a consistent slot in your calendar, treating it with the same importance as a romantic date. Ensure you’re free from distractions and create a serene environment conducive to deep conversation with God. Share your emotions, thoughts, and concerns openly, to deepen your intimacy with God. **Scroll down below for prayers!

4. Journal your thoughts and emotions:

During your fast and prayer for your future husband, journaling is important for reflection and connection with God. In your journal, write down dreams, prophetic words, what you hope God will do, what areas you need healing in, your current struggles, and where you want to be at the end of the fast. Invite God to guide your prayers and lead you toward His plan for your life and future marriage. **Scroll down below for journal questions!

5. Express gratitude and worship:

Take moments throughout your day to praise God for His goodness and sovereignty. Offer thanks for His presence and guidance on your journey towards marriage. Use prayer, praise, and adoration to ground yourself in faith and cultivate divine love and peace.

6. Let go and let God guide you:

Give God your ideas about who your husband should be, the timeframe, and how you think your story should happen. You may have expectations about his appearance, career, finances, personality, or when you will meet. Bring those desires to God, but leave room for Him to lead you differently. Trust Him with the person, timing, and process.

7. Read scripture about marriage:

As you continue on your fasting and prayer journey for your future husband, immerse yourself in the timeless wisdom found within the pages of scripture. Set aside dedicated time each day to read and meditate on passages related to marriage, relationships, and God’s divine plan for your life. Allow the truth of God’s word to penetrate your heart and shape your perspective on love, commitment, and partnership. Draw inspiration and guidance from biblical examples of godly marriages and apply their principles to your own journey of preparation. **Scroll down below for biblical stories to read during this time.

8. Pray for him and yourself:

Prayer is a powerful tool that enables us to connect with God and intercede on behalf of others. Set aside intentional time each day to lift up your future husband in prayer. Pray for his spiritual growth, emotional well-being, and alignment with God’s will. Ask God to protect him from temptations, guide him in his journey, and prepare his heart for the blessings of marriage. Additionally, pray for yourself, seeking God’s strength, wisdom, and grace as you navigate the path towards marriage. Pray for inner healing, character refinement, and readiness to embrace the partner God has destined for you.

9. Become who you want him to be:

As you start your fasting and prayer journey for your future husband, it’s important to think about the kind of partner you want. Make a husband list with qualities you hope to find in him. At the same time, focus on growing yourself. Think about traits like being emotionally stable, kind, and generous. Reflect on whether you have these qualities too. Work on improving yourself through prayer and self-reflection. Look at areas in your life that need healing or growth, and trust that God will guide you. By doing this, you’ll become the kind of person who naturally attracts the right partner.

10. Ask God for Next Steps

Do not let waiting for a husband make you inactive. Ask God what He wants you to do in this season. That may mean continuing to heal, pursuing your education or career, serving others, growing in ministry, or becoming open to dating when the time is right. Keep walking in the good works God has already prepared for you and trust Him with what comes next.

How do I journal while fasting?

Use your fast to dream with God about the marriage you desire while allowing Him to prepare your heart for it. You are not creating a perfect soulmate checklist. You are learning to recognize godly character and becoming intentional about the kind of marriage you want to build.

Journal: Imagine the Husband and Marriage You Desire

Take a moment to picture your everyday life with a godly husband. What would it feel like to share your life with someone who is pursuing God and growing alongside you? Write your thoughts and answers in your journal.

  • Imagine coming home to a man who is humble. You have a disagreement, but instead of becoming defensive, he can say, “I was wrong.” He listens, apologizes, and wants to make things right. What would it mean to you to have a husband who can humble himself like this?
  • Imagine a home filled with kindness. Even on stressful days, you know you will be treated with gentleness. His love is not just something he says. You see it in the way he speaks to you, serves you, and treats other people. What would kindness look like in your everyday marriage?
  • Imagine being able to talk about anything. You can bring up something difficult without wondering if he will shut down, explode, or avoid the conversation. You both listen, speak honestly, and work toward understanding. What kind of communication would help you feel safe enough to be honest?
  • Imagine making important decisions together. Your husband does not simply do what he thinks is best. He seeks God, considers your thoughts, and takes responsibility for leading your family well. What would godly leadership look like in your home?
  • Imagine watching him choose God when it costs him something. His faith is not just words. You see him receive correction, turn away from temptation, and choose obedience when no one else is watching. What would it look like for his relationship with God to shape the way he lives?
  • Imagine a husband who keeps choosing you. He makes time for your relationship, protects your connection, and does not treat marriage like something that only you have to work hard for. What would intentional love and commitment look like to you?
  • Imagine feeling safe enough to grow. You both have weaknesses, but neither of you expects perfection. You can admit when you are wrong, learn from each other, and become better together. What would you want your marriage to help you grow into?

Now turn the questions toward yourself. Ask God to reveal what you may need to heal, surrender, or grow in before marriage. Remember, It will make it easier to identify your partner’s level of healing when you’re healed.

    • Emotional needs: Am I looking for a husband to make me feel loved, beautiful, worthy, or less lonely?
    • Past wounds: Am I carrying pain from childhood, friendships, or past relationships that affects how I trust or respond to people?
    • Fear and control: When I feel rejected, abandoned, or uncertain, do I try to control, withdraw, people-please, or protect myself?
    • Expectations: Am I expecting a husband to meet every emotional need, always understand me, share all my interests, or make me feel loved all the time?
    • Trust: Can I trust God with my future and my relationship, even when things do not happen according to my plans?
    • Purpose: Am I putting my life on hold while I wait for a husband, or am I walking in the good works God has already prepared for me?
    • Generational patterns: Are there unhealthy patterns in my family that I need God’s help to recognize and break?
    • Vulnerability: Can I be open and honest while still using wisdom and healthy boundaries?

Ask God to heal what needs healing, strengthen what needs strengthening, and give you discernment to recognize godly character when you encounter it. You do not need to become perfect before you can be loved or married. You are allowing God to prepare you to love well, choose wisely, and build a healthy marriage.

Read and Journal Scripture About Marriage

Study biblical relationships to prepare your heart for marriage and journal your thoughts and wisdom that you gleaned while reading. Here are a few examples, but there are many more:

    • Sarah and Abraham: Impatience in marriage (Genesis 16:1–6)
    • Leah: Not feeling chosen (Genesis 29:31–35)
    • Joseph and Mary: Responding with compassion (Matthew 1:18–25)
    • Naomi and Elimelech: Marriage through loss (Ruth 1:1–5)
    • David and his family: Handling family conflict (2 Samuel 13–18)
    • Ruth and Boaz: Honor and godly character (Ruth 2–4)
    • Priscilla and Aquila: Serving God together (Acts 18:24–26)
    • Ephesians 5: Husbands and wives (Ephesians 5:21–33)
    • Proverbs 31: Character of a wife (Proverbs 31:10–31)

What prayers to say while fasting?

You should say prayers that focus on the spiritual maturity of you and your future husband. And you should pray that you are both in God’s divine timing to meet, date, and get married.

You should pray that your husband:

    • Protected from temptations: O’ Lord, I ask that you protect my husband from the schemes of the enemy. I ask that you keep him pure and righteous in your sight. I declare that he has laser vision and focus to follow your leading, right now.
    • Submits to the leading of the Lord: Father in heaven, thank you for guiding my husband into your will. I ask that he would have clear discernment, so he doesn’t stray from your path.
    • Has a pure heart: O’ Lord, I ask that you search my husband’s heart and cleanse it from pride, anger, lust, rebellion, deceit, fear, and control. Thank you, Father, because as I pray, he is letting go of control and dying to his flesh.
    • Is filled with fruits of the spirit: Abba father, thank you for filling my husband with “…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, [and] self-control…” – Galatians 5:22-23.
    • Has financial and career success: O’ Lord, bless my husband with promotions, jobs, and favor so that he can do your will. I ask that he would work unto you and not unto man. I thank you that he is stable and can keep a job. I thank you that he is financially wise, saves, and a cheerful giver.
    • Can make good decisions: Father, I desire a man that seeks you for decisions and moves swiftly at the sound of your voice. Thank you, Father, that you are preparing my husband’s heart and mind to make great decisions that honor you and bring good fruits.
    • Has a great community: I thank you, Papa, for surrounding my husband with good family, friends, and spiritual mentors. I thank you that he is accountable to them, and he considers their guidance. I ask that he would feel loved and seen by his community. Thank you that he hears their wisdom and it’s guiding him in the right direction.
    • Will fight for connection: O’ Lord, I pray that my husband would become bold and focused in his pursuit of you. I thank you that his submission to you will lead him to me. I ask that he wouldn’t waste time, and he wouldn’t let insecurities or anything hinder him from fiercely coming after me.

4 Prayers for A Future Husband

    • O Lord, I thank you for putting excitement in my spirit for my Godly match. I am grateful that you see the end from the beginning and have good things in store for me. Please remove any fear, pain, and unhealed areas in my heart. Father, help me to be whole and secure in you so that I do not depend on my husband to be my source of love, life, and happiness. You make me complete, God. You make me whole. I thank you for loving me to the depths of my core, and I pray that my husband would also experience the depth and width of your love. I ask that we would both understand your love so much that real love becomes our standard. Amen.
    • Dear Father, I pray that my future husband and I will not be emotionally attracted to partners who are not meant for us. Thank you for giving us the strength and confidence to trust your warnings when someone is not our spouse. Please protect us from counterfeits, toxic relationships, and partners who seek to harm us. I ask for discernment and revelation so that we may see the depths of their heart. I trust you to guide my dating life, Father, and I place my heart in your hands. I believe that you will guide us both to each other because we complement each other. Thank you for helping us to understand our personalities, likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. Amen.
    • Thank you, Father, because in our time of singleness, you are boldly equipping us. You are teaching us about our calling and how we can love the body of Christ. Please help us both to begin walking in our Godly purpose and hear your direction to walk in the power of the Gospel. I desire to be a testimony of your love, God. I also desire that my future marriage magnifies your name and promotes the kingdom of God. Thank you for teaching my husband and me about the Bible and how to love others. I am excited to be in a relationship that is ordained by you, God! I trust you, Abba. Amen.
    • Thank you, God, for bringing a Godly man into my life. I ask for the love, gentleness, honesty, and strength to love him as you do. Lord, I humbly submit myself to you, and I ask that I could be humble in his sight as well. Thank you for molding me to be a Proverbs 31 woman who brings my husband honor. O’ Lord, I also thank you for doing the same work in his heart. I am grateful that you are causing us to be equally yoked so that we can walk together. With you, God, we are powerful, and we will honor you with our lives, family, and love. Amen.
