How to Glow Up Mentally: 22 Powerful Steps!

You are meant to glow even when everything around you seems dark and painful. You are meant to shine so brightly that you uplift the people around you. You are meant to live a confident, happy, and hope-filled life.

According to Urban Dictionary, a Glow Up is a mental, physical, and emotional transformation for the better.

Essentially, I have created these steps to help you achieve a mental Glow Up, so that you can discover your highest and best self despite any obstacles you may face.

How to Glow Up Mentally 

1. Spend time reflecting 

Slowing down to reach a place of inner and external awareness is crucial for your mental Glow Up. Often, we get so caught up in the busyness of life that we enter into survival mode, merely trying to get through each day or difficult situation. This can cause us to lose touch with our desires, needs, and even our emotions.

Challenge yourself to quiet the noise and spend time with yourself. During this time, you can pray, journal, meditate, stretch, recite affirmations, or simply savor the beauty of being present.

No matter what you choose to do, ensure that you make time to get to know yourself. You are a deep well, and there is more to you beneath the surface than you may realize.

2. Build resilience 

The ability to confront life’s challenges with positivity and strength is what allows us to continue glowing. Therefore, to achieve a mental Glow Up, it is suggested that you begin learning how to increase your resilience.

Resilience is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.”

According to a study, “resilience training reduced average depression symptoms by 33% to 44%, and helped participants improve their overall health and well-being, with physical (43%), emotional (40%), and mental (38%) well-being measures all showing improvement.”

3. Surround yourself with people that glow

Positioning yourself around confident individuals who love themselves is crucial. The reality is that surrounding yourself with others who are also striving to Glow Up can transform your life. They will inspire, encourage, and empathize with you.

On the other hand, try to steer clear of people who dim your light, gossip, complain, have a negative impact on you, or make you feel less empowered. In essence, avoid individuals who undermine the positive mindset you are working to cultivate.

4. Practice self-love

Make time to recognize your strengths, talents, and efforts. Give yourself compliments. Celebrate your accomplishments. And if you find it challenging to do so, surround yourself with individuals who encourage and support you.

You radiate when you have love for yourself! When you recognize that your personality and way of thinking were uniquely bestowed upon you by a higher power.

5. Seek counseling or coaching

Our hearts can become overcrowded and disorganized with a plethora of emotions and wounds, akin to a messy room. This emotional clutter can eventually hinder our ability to Glow Up.

Emotional pain lowers our capacity to shine.

6. Remove what isn’t working

The people you surround yourself with have a significant impact on your mental glow up. Seek out friends and mentors who have similar values and goals as you. Find a community that supports and encourages you to grow.

Additionally, it’s essential to set healthy boundaries with people who drain your energy or bring negativity into your life. It’s okay to distance yourself from toxic relationships, even if it’s difficult.

Remember that your mental glow up is a continuous journey. Stay committed to self-reflection, growth, and self-care. With time and effort, you can achieve your highest and best self.

7. Take a well deserved break 

Taking a break or a vacation is essential for your mental health. It’s a way to refresh and recharge yourself. Research has shown that people who take vacations have lower stress levels, a decreased risk of heart disease, a better outlook on life, and increased motivation to achieve goals. So, give yourself the treat of downtime and take a break from your daily routine. You deserve it!

Your mental health will thank you later.

8. Re-organize or clean 

Being in a clean and organized environment can positively impact your mental health. Take the time to declutter and reorganize your space to feel freshly inspired and motivated.

According to a study, clutter can make you feel overwhelmed and anxious, which can affect your productivity and overall well-being. So, taking some time to tidy up your surroundings can help you feel more in control and at ease.

9. Don’t sweat the small stuff

Life is too short to worry about things that won’t matter in the long run. If something is causing you frustration, consider if it’s worth your time and energy. Sometimes, it’s better to let things go.

Reflect on what is causing you stress. Do you need to remove the source of frustration from your life, or do you need to make changes to your schedule or mindset to manage it better?

10. Tackle your fears and weaknesses 

Our fears and weaknesses are often obstacles that prevent us from living our dream life. Learning to let go of them will allow you to live lighter and pursue true happiness and your desires.

Take some time to consider your fears and weaknesses. Are you afraid of something in your past or future? Do you fear making a fool of yourself? Is it a fear of being alone? What is your weakness? How can you turn it into a strength? Sit with these questions and search for ways to improve. The more emotionally healed you are, the more your inner beauty will shine!

11. Explore self improvement resources

Reading books and watching motivational videos can help you grow mentally. There are many great options out there, including the Amazon’s Best Seller list for self-improvement books.

Personally, I love listening to TD Jakes’ business advice. I also recommend checking out the book “The Big Leap,” which aims to help you conquer hidden fears that may be holding you back from living the life you desire. Additionally, TED Talks and podcasts are great resources for finding motivation and inspiration. Find what works best for you and make time for it in your daily routine.

12. Explore Spirituality

Exploring your spirituality can help you find inner peace and purpose. Whether it’s through religion, meditation, or personal reflection, taking time to connect with your inner self can help you glow from within and radiate positivity to those around you.

In my personal experience, accepting the Holy Spirit into my life has caused me to glow from the inside out. I found that improving my relationship with God and allowing His divine spirit to manifest within me has also helped me radiate positivity to those around me. Opening myself up to be a resting place for God’s essence has been key in brightening my inner self and causing me to glow outwardly. It’s amazing how people are drawn to my supernatural and heavenly qualities.

13. Take care of your body

Taking care of your physical body through exercise, healthy eating habits, and adequate sleep has a significant impact on your physical and mental well-being. Consuming certain foods and incorporating movement into your daily routine can lead to clearer skin, increased energy levels, and a more positive outlook on life.

Exercise and healthy eating also reduce stress and anxiety and boost self-esteem and confidence. Additionally, getting enough sleep is crucial for maintaining good physical and mental health. By taking care of your body in these ways, you can radiate positivity and good health in all aspects of your life.

14. Pursue your goals

Are you ready to glow up? Start by outlining your life goals carefully. Don’t just focus on career aspirations, but also prioritize your emotional and social growth. Personally, I’ve made intentional decisions to improve my life – in 2012, I chose to eliminate passive-aggressive behavior, in 2013 I committed to living life with no regrets, and in 2021, I decided to make the next decade my most fun and fulfilling yet!

What goals are you striving towards? Do you dream of writing and publishing a book, or journaling more frequently? Perhaps you want to deepen your spiritual connection with God, work on emotional healing, wear heels more often, spend more time with loved ones, or start your own business.

Remember, you only have one life to live, so don’t hold back! I urge you to pursue your passions and make your dreams a priority. What have you always wanted to do but put on the back burner? Now is the time to make it happen and glow up in the process!

15. Find your tribe

A supportive community can boost your confidence and help you achieve your personal and professional goals. When building your tribe, consider people who share your interests, values, and goals. Look for local events, groups, and organizations to connect with like-minded individuals. Professional organizations and online platforms can also offer opportunities to connect with others in your industry or with similar goals.

16. Moving in Silence

Moving in silence is a powerful strategy for anyone striving to achieve their goals. It means keeping your personal plans and dreams to yourself, avoiding negative energy and criticism from others. This allows you to stay grounded and focused on your priorities without being distracted by opinions. Remember to find a balance between privacy and connection, while you’re achieving your full potential.

17. Release Limiting Beliefs

You came to this article because you’re eager to go from A to Z and fulfill the desires and dreams of your heart. But what’s stopping you from becoming the best version of yourself? Take a moment to ask yourself: Who do I want to be? What is holding me back?

It’s time to face your limiting beliefs that tell you that you’re not capable of achieving your goals. The truth is that you are powerful and have the ability to do the impossible. You have a unique purpose, and with determination and the right mindset, you can reach the next level of success. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and refuse to let negative thoughts or obstacles hold you back. It’s time to confront your limiting beliefs and unleash your full potential.

18. Practice Gratitude

Incorporating gratitude into your daily routine can be a key factor in achieving a “glow up.” By practicing gratitude, you can cultivate a positive mindset and attitude, which can attract good things and people into your life. Additionally, being grateful allows you to appreciate the small joys in life and those around you, leading to a more fulfilling and happy life.

19. Practice Mindfulness

Taking the time to slow down and appreciate each moment, explore your inner world, and cherish your time with loved ones can contribute to your overall glow up. By prioritizing these things, you can increase your sense of well-being and find greater fulfillment in your life.

20. Try something new

Engaging in the same routine can keep you feeling low and uninspired. Therefore, it’s important to explore new opportunities, hobbies, and tasks to keep your life exciting. Those who try new things are often bursting with positive energy, which can cause them to radiate positivity from the inside out, resulting in a glowing appearance.

21. Release Comparison & Competition

Comparing ourselves to others can be toxic and hinder our growth. Instead of focusing on what others have or what they are doing, it’s important to embrace your unique journey and celebrate your progress. This will not only help you grow personally, but it will also help you appreciate the beauty in others without feeling threatened or inferior. When we release comparison and competition, we free ourselves to be the best version of ourselves and truly shine from within.

22. Embrace your feminine energy

Embracing your feminine energy can also contribute to your overall glow up. This means allowing yourself to connect with your emotions, intuition, and nurturing side. It’s about finding balance between your masculine and feminine energies, and being comfortable with expressing both.
