25 Benefits of the Word of God + Scriptures

Please share with others!

Reading and studying the word of God is one of the most beneficial things a believer can do. It gives believers something to believe in when times get hard. Similarly, King Solomon recognized the importance of the word and its power to guide and protect. In Proverbs 4:20-22, he urged his son to pay attention to his words and keep them close to his heart, as they are a source of life and health.

Ultimately, God is a constant presence in our lives, and his promises never waver. In a world where circumstances can quickly change, we can find comfort in the consistency of his word. As believers, we can rest assured that God’s promises in the Bible are unchanging and will always be our portion.

What are the benefits of the Word of God?

1. It Provides a Solid Foundation

The Bible is like an anchor, keeping us from swaying in our emotions, just as a boat needs an anchor to keep it stable in high tide water. Additionally, false teachings can shake our faith. Studying the word of God helps us to be anchored in truth and avoid confusion caused by false teachings that promote sin and deny the power of Jesus’ finished work.

The Bible provides clear guidance on what is sin and what is appropriate, explaining righteousness in a straightforward manner. By reading the Bible, we can gain a solid understanding of God’s truth and avoid confusion or deception caused by false teachings. It serves as a reliable source of wisdom and discernment, helping us to navigate the challenges of life with confidence and clarity.

“…and become mature… Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” (Ephesians 4:11-14)

2. Helps Us Withstand the Storms of Life

The word of God is a solid foundation that keeps us grounded, as Jesus said in Matthew 7:24, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

By building our lives on the truth of God’s word, we can withstand the storms of life and remain steadfast in our faith. The Bible provides us with clear guidance on how to live a life that pleases God, and by following its teachings, we can experience the blessings of His grace and favor.

3. Provides Us With Instruction and Guidance

The Bible is like a light that illuminates the confusing and scary paths before us. When we find ourselves in frustrating or challenging situations, it can feel like we are walking in the dark, unsure of where to go. But the Bible promises to be our source of guidance and direction when we feel lost or in need of spiritual guidance.

As Psalm 119:105 and 130 say, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path,” and “The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.” By turning to the Bible, we can find the wisdom and clarity we need to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and faith.

4. It Helps Us Learn from the Past

The Bible has a treasure chest of stories about faithful men and women who have gone before us, such as David, Joseph, Ruth, John, Paul, and many others. Through their stories, we can learn from their examples of faith and perseverance, as well as their moments of weakness and sin.

By studying their journeys, we can gain insight into how to become more like God, how to preach the word, and how to live for a greater purpose. As Paul wrote in Romans 15:4, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”

The stories in the Bible provide us with enduring lessons and encouragement, inspiring us to have hope and to keep pressing on in our own faith journey.

5. It Helps Us Maintain Purity

The Bible thoroughly explains what is sin and what is righteousness. Reading the word can help us understand what God wants and choose it consistently: “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word” (Psalm 119:9).

Through studying the Bible, we can gain a clear understanding of what pleases God and what does not. It provides guidance on how to live a righteous life, which in turn helps us maintain a pure heart and mind.

6. It Helps Us Overcome Temptations

In 1 Corinthians 10:13, it states that God will provide us with a way of escape for every temptation that we encounter. One of the strategies to avoid temptations and sin is to follow the word of God.

Similarly, when Jesus was tested in the desert, He was able to avoid the temptations of Satan because He knew the word of God. When Satan said, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread,” Jesus replied back with Deuteronomy 8:3 and said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:3-4).

Therefore, studying and memorizing the word of God can help us during times of temptation, as it will come to mind and guide us in the way of truth: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).

7. It Teaches Us How to Be Successful

Living a life of integrity and righteousness may seem challenging at times, especially when we see wicked people prospering through deceit and dishonesty. However, we must remember that in due time, the wicked will be brought low, and the righteous will be exalted.

Moreover, leading a righteous life and showing kindness and honesty to others can earn us favor, which can lead us to great heights, as demonstrated by Joseph who was granted favor with Pharaoh because of his righteousness and integrity. (Proverbs 3:3-4)

Psalm 1:1-3 reminds us that those who avoid the ways of the wicked and instead delight in the word of God will flourish like a tree planted by a stream, yielding fruit in due season and never withering. Additionally, Joshua understood the importance of staying true to God’s word and meditating on it constantly. In Joshua 1:8, he was encouraged to keep the Book of the Law close to his heart and mind, obeying all that it commanded. As a result, God promised to make his way prosperous and to grant him success.

8. It Searching Our Thoughts

Hebrews 4:12 speaks to the transformative power of the word of God. When we read the Bible, it has an active effect on our hearts and minds. It has the ability to penetrate deeply within us, breaking down thoughts and perspectives that may hinder us from understanding it from a healthy perspective.

The verse describes the word of God as “living and active” and “sharper than any two-edged sword,” emphasizing its power to discern the thoughts and intentions of our hearts, and to divide between our soul and spirit, joints and marrow. In essence, this verse teaches us that the word of God is not a passive document, but a dynamic force that can change us from the inside out.

9. Teaching, Discipline, Training, and Correction

The word of God is important for teaching all how to be righteous, learning’s God character, and encouraging to continue being disciplined and consistent in our pursuit of God. Additionally, the Bible trains us with wisdom and corrects us when we are no longer doing things that honor God.

The Bible is necessary, to keep us on track. This passage highlights that the Bible is not just a collection of stories or teachings, but rather, it is a living document that guides us in our daily lives: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

10. It’s Encouraging

Reading the stories of believers before us can give us hope that God’s promises are real. For instance, the stories of Joseph and David waiting years for the promises of God in their lives remind us that we aren’t doing anything wrong as we continue to wait.

Moreover, reading that Paul was forgiven after murdering Christians can remind believers that God’s love is beyond our comprehension. Essentially, God allows the stories in the Bible to be revealed to us in a way that fits our story and encourages us when we read the Bible.

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4)

11. The Bible Sets Us Free

Many people believe that there is no hope for their mental or physical health. While others may feel trapped in sin, which brings unhappiness and pain into their lives. However, the Bible offers us freedom from unhealthy mindsets, behaviors, and lifestyles that wreaks havoc on our lives.

People may also feel like they lack purpose and guidance from a loving father. But the Bible tells us a different truth that can free us from seeking earthly pleasures and living a mundane, hopeless life like the rest of the world.

In John 8:31-32, Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” This verse teaches us that by following Jesus and abiding in his teachings, we can find true freedom and purpose in life.

12. The Bible gives us Longer Life

King Hezekiah, king of Judah, asked God for a longer life and God added 15 more years to his life. However, that’s not what I’m referring to when I say the Bible gives us longer life. Instead, I’m highlighting that by following the teachings and guidelines in the Bible, we can lead a healthier and happier life, which can add more years to our lives.

Studies, including the research conducted by Laura E. Wallace, suggest that attending religious services regularly is linked to longer life. This is because following the principles of the Bible helps us manage stress and build emotional resilience to overcome problems and challenges. Furthermore, avoiding sinful behaviors is important since engaging in sin can lead to unnecessary problems and stress in our lives, which can negatively impact our physical and mental health.

  • This verse emphasizes that following God’s teachings can lead to a longer life filled with peace and happiness: Proverbs 3:1-2 – “My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.”
  • This suggests that those who live a morally upright and righteous life may experience longer lifespans compared to those who engage in unrighteous and immoral behaviors: Proverbs 10:27, which says, “The fear of the Lord prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short.”

13. It’s Soul Refreshing

Sometimes we may feel spiritually dry, lost and alone, but the Bible is like a refreshing drink that revives our soul. It gives us the strength to continue on our journey, even during the tough and confusing times.

As it says in Psalm 19:7-8, “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.”

14. Healing

The word of God serves as a powerful reminder that God wants to heal us, not just physically but also emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. When we allow His words to sink into our souls, it can heal us from the inside out, so we can radiate righteousness and purity. The Bible provides countless examples of healing in the Old and New Testament, and Jesus alone was responsible for over 37 recorded healings.

Proverbs 4:20-22 says, “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.” This passage highlights the power of the word of God to bring healing to all aspects of our lives.

15. Our Words Will be Anointed

The Bible is like food for our souls, and when we consume it, it nourishes and grows us. As the Prophet Jeremiah said in Jeremiah 15:16, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart...”

When we allow God’s word to take root in us, it transforms us from the inside out. Our words and actions become more beautiful, reflecting the love, purity, wisdom, and mercy of God. As Jesus said in Matthew 12:34-40, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.

Therefore, it is essential to allow the word of Christ to dwell in us richly, as Colossians 3:16 instructs, so that we may be filled with wisdom, thankfulness, and joy, and share those blessings with others.

16. It Helps Us Get the Victory

The Bible teaches us that if God is on our side, no one can stand against us. This means that we are destined to be victorious as long as we follow the advice in the Scriptures. In Ephesians 6:17, we are instructed to take up the “helmet of salvation” and the “sword of the Spirit,” which is the word of God.

By arming ourselves in the Bible, we equip ourselves with the weapons to overcome any spiritual battle or obstacle that we may encounter. The word of God provides us with guidance in facing our enemies, defeating evil, and confronting challenges.
