Proverbs 31 offers a powerful portrayal of a godly woman, emphasizing her immense worth and unique qualities, stating that she is “far more precious than rubies.”

This passage highlights her wisdom, kindness, and care, as seen in Proverbs 31:10. Beyond Proverbs 31, other scriptures like Titus 2:3-5 and 1 Peter 3:3-4  also outline the characteristics of a virtuous woman, focusing on purity, kindness, and a gentle spirit.

In essence, the Bible serves as a comprehensive guide for those striving to embody these qualities. It doesn’t just list them; it provides a rich, multifaceted picture of what it means to be a godly woman throughout various passages, not just Proverbs 31.

12 Qualities of a Godly Woman

A godly woman reflects Christ in all she does, displaying qualities that honor God and inspire those around her. Here are 12 descriptive words that capture the essence of a godly woman, each supported by Scripture to guide you in your walk with God.

1. Gentle and Quiet Spirit: A godly woman’s spirit is gentle and quiet, reflecting inner peace and strength. 1 Peter 3:4 reminds us that “the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight,” can have a profound impact, even on those who don’t know Christ. Her calmness and grace can bring peace to others, drawing them closer to God.

2. God is First: A godly woman prioritizes God above all else. Just as Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet while Martha rushed around, a godly woman chooses to focus on God’s presence, spending time in His Word and prayer. Luke 10:42 tells us, “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Her heart is content and still in the presence of God.

3. Carries God’s Promises: A godly woman carries God’s promises, just as Mary and Elizabeth carried God’s purpose through pregnancy, despite the trials they faced. Luke 1:45 says, “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her.” She knows that God’s promises are trustworthy, and she protects and nurtures them even in difficult times.

4. Loyal and Selfless: Like Ruth, who showed unwavering loyalty to Naomi, a godly woman is loyal to those she loves and selfless in her service. Ruth 1:16-17 says, “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.” Her commitment to others is steadfast, placing their needs above her own.

5. Submissive: A godly woman is submissive to wise counsel, like Esther, who listened to Mordecai’s advice, even when it wasn’t easy. Esther 4:14-16 shows how Esther’s submission to God’s plan and guidance from others led to the deliverance of her people. Her submission reflects humility and trust in God’s direction.

6. Unconditional Love: A godly woman loves others unconditionally, just as Christ loved us. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes love as patient, kind, and not easily angered. Her love is not based on what others do for her, but on her commitment to reflect God’s love to those around her.

7. Courage and Integrity: A godly woman stands firm for what is right, even when it’s difficult. Proverbs 31:25 says, “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Her courage and integrity inspire others to live with honesty and conviction, even in the face of adversity.

8. Prayerful Example: A godly woman leads by example in prayer, showing others how to seek God’s will. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 encourages us to “pray continually,” and a godly woman models this by being diligent in prayer for her loved ones, her community, and herself. She understand the purpose and benefits of being a praying woman.

9. Righteous Living: Committed to moral living, a godly woman seeks to honor God in every aspect of her life. Psalm 1:1-2 says, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take but whose delight is in the law of the Lord.” She avoids sin and follows the guidance of the Holy Spirit, living a life that reflects righteousness.

10. Dedicated to Prayer: A godly woman understands the importance of prayer and values her time with God. Mark 1:35 shows Jesus rising early to pray, demonstrating the need for quiet moments with God. A godly woman’s commitment to prayer strengthens her relationship with God and prepares her for the challenges ahead.

11. Forgiveness: A godly woman forgives others just as Christ forgave her. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” She lets go of grudges and bitterness, reflecting God’s grace through her actions.

12. Compassion Over Criticism: Instead of being critical, a godly woman chooses compassion. Colossians 3:12 urges, “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” She seeks to understand and empathize, bringing healing and understanding rather than judgment.

Bonus Traits: She carries the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Her life reflects the fragrance of Christ, leaving a positive and lasting impact on those around her.
